A night owl’s guide to Madeira
It’s something of a mystery how Madeira ever got a reputation for being staid: this is an island where people know how to party. Come evening, the capital, Funchal, buzzes with people sipping cocktails in rooftop bars, sharing a bottle of Madeira wine in quaint cobbled squares, or watching the sunset over carafes of poncha (a heady local concoction of sugar cane rum, lemon juice and honey) from a cafe on the water’s edge.

You can try your luck in the casino, or dance till dawn in a lively bar or club. With a packed programme of festivals throughout the year celebrating all aspects of island life, there’s bound to be a party going on no matter when you arrive.
