Get active in Madeira

It’s impossible to look at Madeira’s dramatic landscape without feeling the urge to get out there and enjoy it. It’s lucky, then, that the island is geared up for outdoor activities of all kinds.

Walking holidays are particularly popular thanks to the levada trails, which follow the routes of the irrigation canals that wind around mountain slopes and through the ancient forest.

You can explore by bike or on horseback, or head off on a guided Jeep safari…

Or for a taste of the truly unusual, head to Porto Moniz on Madeira’s north-western tip for a swim in lava pools filled by the tide.
